Northern Lights Viewing at Þingvellir National Park
Golden Circle, Iceland
About This Activity
Þingvellir National Park is one of Iceland's premier Northern Lights viewing spots: its wide open lava fields sit far from Reykjavík's light pollution, yet it's only 45 minutes from the city. On clear evenings with high Kp-index activity, the aurora can fill the entire sky over the Almannagjá rift valley. The UNESCO World Heritage site is free to enter and open around the clock. Check Aurora Forecast Iceland (en.vedur.is) before heading out. Bring warm layers — temperatures drop sharply after dark. The 2026 solar maximum is producing the strongest geomagnetic storms in over a decade, making this winter and spring unusually active for aurora hunters.
Seasonal note: Northern Lights season Sep–Mar; 2026 solar maximum = brightest auroras in a decade. Peak darkness Dec–Feb. Park open year-round.
