About This Activity

The Basilica di Santa Croce took 150 years to build (1549–1695) and its façade is the definitive statement of barocco leccese — a riot of grotesque masks, angels, cherubs, animals, and floral garlands carved in warm golden pietra leccese limestone. Master craftsmen Gabriele Riccardi and Francesco Antonio Zimbalo created its most elaborate sections; no two sections of the façade repeat the same motif. The interior, by contrast, is airy and restrained. Entry is free; the basilica faces a small piazza across from the former Celestine monastery — a perfect spot to observe how the stone changes colour from white to amber in afternoon light.

Seasonal note: Year-round; afternoon light turns the golden limestone most spectacular; best April–June and Sept–Oct
