Contrary to some of the nearby towns, this area of wilderness and rugged coastline is sparsely populated with few homes, hotels and restaurants, making the exploration extra magical. Depending on how much hiking you want to do and how much you want to see in Big Sur, you might have to split your exploration over two days. If you're heading south to your next base city, you can also explore Big Sur during your drive down the PCH, but note that it makes for a packed day to sightsee Big Sur and get to your next destination all in one day.
