About This Activity
The Arquivo Nacional Torre do Tombo on Alameda da Universidade is Portugal's national archive and the primary destination for genealogical research. Its holdings span over 600 years: parish registers (baptisms, marriages, deaths) from the 16th century onward, emigration passports and ship manifests, land records, and notarial deeds. The archive's digitised collections are partially available free on the national Digitarq platform. Walk-in access to the reading room is free; bring photo ID. Professional genealogists can be engaged through the archive's referral list for deeper research.
