About This Activity

Sinagoga Shaaré Tikvá ('Gates of Hope') on Rua Alexandre Herculano is Portugal's largest synagogue and the spiritual center of Lisbon's Jewish community. Built in 1904 in Moorish Revival style, its understated street facade conceals a striking interior with horseshoe arches, Star of David motifs, and stained glass. The building symbolizes the slow return of open Jewish life to Portugal after 400 years of post-Inquisition suppression. Visits are possible by appointment or during open hours (check the Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa website). The small community library holds documents tracing Sephardic genealogy back to the 15th century.

Seasonal note: Year-round; indoor site. Check visiting hours in advance — closed Saturdays and Jewish holidays
