Palais des Papes & Walled City, Avignon
Provence, France
About This Activity
The Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic palace ever built, a soaring fortress that served as the seat of the Catholic Church from 1309 to 1377. Audio-guided entry (HistoPad included) costs €12 for the palace alone or €14.50 combined with the Pont Saint-Bénézet. The walled medieval city inside Avignon's ramparts is easily walkable in half a day. The city hosts the Festival d'Avignon each July — the world's largest performing arts event.
Seasonal note: Avignon Festival in July packs the city — book accommodation months ahead; palace open daily year-round, 9 am-7 pm Apr-Oct
