About This Activity

The Beth Shalom Synagogue (1935) in central Athens is the city's main place of Jewish worship. Nearby, the Athens Holocaust Memorial (unveiled 2010) commemorates the 67,000 Greek Jews — 87% of the prewar population — murdered during the Nazi occupation. The monument's star-shaped design includes fragments of the destroyed Thessaloniki Jewish cemetery. The Athens Jewish community (~3,000 members) is one of the oldest in Europe, with Romaniote roots predating Christianity. Contact the community office for synagogue access.
