German Colony (Ben-Gurion Boulevard)
Haifa, Israel
About This Activity
Haifa's German Colony is a beautifully preserved neighbourhood established by German Templar settlers in the 1860s. The main boulevard (Ben-Gurion Avenue) is lined with symmetrically placed stone houses in a distinctive German-Swabian style, now occupied by restaurants, cafes, galleries, and boutique shops. At the top of the boulevard, the golden dome of the Bahá'í Shrine frames a perfect view down the street and across the bay. The area is particularly pleasant in the late afternoon, when the stone buildings glow in warm light and the outdoor restaurant terraces fill with Haifa's cosmopolitan mix of Jewish, Arab, and Christian residents.
Seasonal note: Year-round. Late afternoon is best for atmosphere and restaurant terraces.
