Essaouira Medina & Ramparts Walk
Essaouira, Morocco
About This Activity
Essaouira's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautifully preserved 18th-century fortress town designed by French architect Theodore Cornut for Sultan Mohammed III. Walk the ramparts (skala) lined with bronze cannons pointing out to sea, wander through the grid-like streets lined with art galleries and woodworking shops, and browse the thuya wood carvings for which the town is famous. The medina is smaller and calmer than Marrakech's, with a distinctly artistic and bohemian character.
Seasonal note: Year-round; spring and fall ideal, windy Jun-Aug (alizee trade winds)
