About This Activity

Kadoorie Mekor Haim is the largest synagogue on the Iberian Peninsula, built in 1938 with funding from the Kadoorie family of Hong Kong. Its austere Art Deco exterior hides a soaring interior with a domed ceiling and seating for 900. The synagogue played a critical role during WWII as a refuge for Jews fleeing Nazi Europe through Porto — many passed through this building on their way to safety. The small community (~100 families) still holds Shabbat services. Visit by arrangement through the Porto Jewish community; closed Saturdays.

Seasonal note: Year-round; check visiting hours in advance — closed Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Porto's main synagogue, one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.
