Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades, Fafe
Porto, Portugal
About This Activity
Portugal sent more emigrants per capita than almost any other European nation in the 20th century — to Brazil, France, Germany, Venezuela, and beyond. The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades in Fafe, founded in 2001 and housed in the Municipal Cultural Centre, is Portugal's first institution dedicated exclusively to this story. Its themed rooms — Memory, Diaspora, and Knowledge — cover the push factors of poverty and dictatorship, the remittance economy that transformed northern Portugal, and the transnational communities that persist today. Fafe is 60 km east of Porto by road or rail.
Seasonal note: Year-round; check municipal calendar for closures
