Stellenbosch Historic Town Walk
Stellenbosch, South Africa
About This Activity
Stellenbosch is South Africa's second-oldest European settlement (founded 1679) and one of its most beautiful. The historic town center is a remarkably intact collection of Cape Dutch, Georgian, and Victorian architecture set along oak-lined streets. The Village Museum on Ryneveld Street groups four historic houses spanning 200 years of colonial domestic life, and the Braak (town square) is ringed by historic buildings including the VOC Kruithuis powder house (1777). Dorp Street, the main heritage thoroughfare, is arguably the most architecturally coherent historic streetscape in South Africa. The University of Stellenbosch, founded in 1918, gives the town an energetic, youthful character.
