The Shambles Medieval Street
York, United Kingdom
About This Activity
The Shambles is one of the most photographed streets in England — a narrow medieval lane with overhanging timber-framed buildings dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, some so close they nearly touch overhead. Once York's butchers' street (the word 'shambles' derives from the Saxon word for a meat market), it is now lined with independent shops, chocolatiers, and cafes. Completely free to walk; busiest in summer mornings.
