El Peñón de Guatapé is one of Colombia's most jaw-dropping sights — a 220-meter-tall granite monolith rising from a reservoir lake, with 740 steep stairs spiraling up through a crack in the rock to a panoramic summit. From the top the view over the Embalse Guatapé reservoir (a maze of inlets, islands, and verdant hills) is extraordinary. The lakeside town of Guatapé itself is famous for its zócalos — brightly painted bas-relief panels decorating every building facade. Tour buses depart Medellín's northern terminal from 6 AM. Allow a full day.
