Colorado Springs is about 70 miles south of Denver (roughly 1.5 hours) and packs some of Colorado's most iconic sights. The must-see is Garden of the Gods, a free park with towering red sandstone formations against a Pikes Peak backdrop. If time allows, drive or ride the cog railway up 14,115-foot Pikes Peak to see the new summit visitor center. Stop in charming Manitou Springs for its mineral springs, vintage Penny Arcade, and eclectic shops. This day trip works best as a full day, departing Denver early.
Seasonal note: Year-round destination. Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak best April–October. Winter driving conditions on I-25 can vary.
