About This Activity
Mount Blue Sky (renamed from Mount Evans in 2023 to honor the Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples) offers the highest paved road in North America. The scenic byway climbs 28 miles from Idaho Springs to alpine tundra at 14,264 feet, where mountain goats roam near the summit. The summit road was closed for construction in 2024–2025 and is expected to reopen for the 2026 season around Memorial Day weekend — check fs.usda.gov for current status. A timed entry ticket ($10/vehicle) plus a recreation pass are required. Allow 2 hours each way from Denver.
Seasonal note: Seasonal — summit road typically open late May through mid-October, weather permitting. Closed winter months. Verify status at fs.usda.gov.
