Vienne, just 30 minutes by train from Lyon, contains some of the finest Roman monuments in France outside of Provence. Visit the Temple d'Auguste et de Livie (a perfectly preserved 1st-century BCE temple), the Arena of Vienne amphitheatre (still used for the summer Jazz à Vienne festival), and the Musée Gallo-Romain for remarkable mosaics and sculptures. A compact and rewarding half-day of Roman history.
