About This Activity

Nice's Great Synagogue (1885) on Rue Gustave Deloye is a neoclassical landmark with an unusual history — Nice was part of the Italian Kingdom of Sardinia until 1860, so its Jewish community has Italian rather than French roots. During WWII, the Italian occupation zone (including Nice) was paradoxically safer for Jews than Vichy-controlled France — until Germany took over in 1943 and deported thousands. Walk from the synagogue through Vieux Nice to see the pre-war Jewish quarter. The community (~20,000) is now one of the largest in France outside Paris.

Seasonal note: Year-round; Great Synagogue closed Saturdays and Jewish holidays; self-guided walk available any day
