About This Activity

The south coast around Vík is one of Iceland's best Northern Lights corridors: far enough from Reykjavík's light pollution, with an open northern horizon across the black sand plains. On clear nights with geomagnetic activity, the aurora can appear directly above Reynisfjara beach and Reynisdrangar sea stacks — an extraordinary backdrop. Drive a short distance east or west of Vík for complete darkness. Monitor aurora forecasts at en.vedur.is (Icelandic Met Office) and the My Aurora Forecast app. The 2026 solar maximum is generating the strongest geomagnetic storms in over a decade, producing vivid green and red auroral displays across Iceland. Best viewing window: 10 PM–2 AM on clear, dark nights.

Seasonal note: Northern Lights season Sep–Mar; 2026 solar maximum = strongest auroras in a decade. Best Dec–Feb for maximum darkness. South coast has minimal light pollution.
