Amalfi, 45 minutes from Sorrento by SITA bus (€2.60), was a maritime republic rivaling Venice in the 9th-11th centuries. The Cathedral of Sant'Andrea on Piazza del Duomo shows Arab-Norman influence in its striped black-and-white interior and 9th-century Byzantine doors. The attached Chiostro del Paradiso garden cloister (€3) is one of Campania's most beautiful spaces. Walk the old paper-making district (Valle dei Mulini), then follow the Lungomare promenade past fishing boats to the Santa Croce sea cave. Easy day trip from Sorrento.
