About This Activity

The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells protects 9,125 acres of salt marsh and upland forest along Maine's southern coast. The Carson Trail — a one-mile interpretive loop — winds through the marsh with views of shorebirds, egrets, and migratory waterfowl. Named for the biologist and author whose 1962 book 'Silent Spring' launched the modern environmental movement; Carson lived and wrote in nearby West Southport. Combine with a visit to Spiller Farm for u-pick strawberries and blueberries in season.

Seasonal note: Year-round; best for birds May-June (nesting) and Aug-Oct (migration); Spiller Farm u-pick June-August
