About This Activity
Christchurch earned its 'Garden City' nickname largely thanks to these exceptional 30-hectare Botanic Gardens on the banks of the Avon River (Ōtākaro). Founded in 1863, the gardens contain over 10,000 plant species across themed zones — the rose garden peaks November–January, the Victorian fernery houses native tree ferns, and the water garden is tranquil year-round. Entry is free. Add a 30-minute punting ride from Antigua Boat Sheds — flat-bottomed punts poled through willows in Edwardian style — for around NZ$30 per adult (book ahead in summer).
Seasonal note: Rose garden peaks November–January; gardens are pleasant year-round but most colourful in spring and summer.
