About This Activity

The 2010–11 Canterbury earthquakes destroyed the historic ChristChurch Cathedral and hundreds of heritage buildings. Japanese architect Shigeru Ban designed this remarkable Transitional Cathedral from 98 cardboard tubes, polycarbonate panels, and shipping container foundations — a globally recognised symbol of resilience. The triangular nave feels genuinely sacred and atmospheric. Entry is free (donations welcomed). Nearby, Cathedral Square is also rebuilding; the original ChristChurch Cathedral remains under long-term restoration. Allow 45–60 minutes for the cathedral and a walk around the square.

Seasonal note: Open year-round; best visited in fine weather for the full architectural effect outside
