San Diego's gentle, consistent waves make it one of the best places in California to learn to surf. Pacific Beach and nearby Tourmaline are ideal for beginners with their sandy bottoms and mellow breaks. Group lessons typically run 1.5-2 hours and include board and wetsuit rental. Instructors get most beginners standing within the first session.
