About This Activity

Bourke's Luck Potholes are a geological curiosity and a visual spectacle — deep cylindrical holes carved into the yellow and red rock at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers by centuries of swirling water and sand. The potholes range from a few centimetres to several metres in diameter, creating a surreal sculptured landscape. Walkways and bridges cross over and around the potholes, offering views into the churning water below. Named after Tom Bourke, a gold prospector who made his claim nearby in the 1880s, the site also marks the start of the Blyde River Canyon and has an excellent visitor centre. Best visited in the morning before tour buses arrive.
