Whirling Dervish Ceremony
Istanbul, Turkey
About This Activity
The Mevlevi sema ceremony, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is a mystical Sufi ritual dating to the 13th century. Whirling dervishes in flowing white robes spin in meditative circles, one palm raised to heaven and the other turned earthward, channeling divine grace. The Hodjapasha Culture Center (a restored 15th-century bathhouse in Sirkeci) hosts nightly shows at 19:00 lasting ~50 minutes — arrive 30 minutes early. The Galata Mevlevi Museum offers a more traditional Sunday ceremony at 17:00 with on-site ticket purchase only.
