Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Big Island, United States
About This Activity
Punalu'u Beach is one of Hawaii's most iconic black sand beaches, formed from volcanic basalt. Endangered green sea turtles (honu) frequently haul out on the sand — keep a respectful 10-foot distance as required by law. Swimming is possible but currents can be strong; it is best for wading and photography. The beach has restrooms, picnic areas, and parking. Allow 1-2 hours.
Seasonal note: Open year-round; calmest conditions Apr-Oct
