About This Activity

Hoa Lo Prison was built by the French in 1896 to hold Vietnamese political prisoners and later housed American POWs during the Vietnam War, earning the ironic nickname 'Hanoi Hilton.' The museum presents both eras: French-era guillotine and shackle exhibits, and POW displays including John McCain's flight suit. It offers a powerful Vietnamese-perspective counterpoint to Western war narratives. Entry is 50,000 VND (~$2); an audio guide is available for an extra 50,000 VND. Open daily; allow 1.5–2 hours.

Seasonal note: Year-round indoor attraction.
