Hvar Fortress (Fortica / Spanish Fort)
Hvar, Croatia
About This Activity
The Fortica (also called the Spanish Fort or Španjol) stands on the hill directly above Hvar Town, reached via a stepped path through cypress and agave. Built in the 16th century to defend against Ottoman raids, this well-preserved fortress houses a museum exhibiting ancient amphorae from Adriatic shipwrecks. The observation tower commands arguably the finest view in Croatia — the Pakleni Islands archipelago spread below in turquoise water, with the distant silhouettes of Brač and the mainland mountains beyond. Adult entry is €12 (€15 for a combined ticket covering the fortress, Hvar Theatre, and Loggia). The walk up takes about 10 minutes; sunset from the ramparts is extraordinary.
Seasonal note: Open April–October; summer visits best at early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat on the exposed climb
