Stari Grad Plain UNESCO
Hvar, Croatia
About This Activity
The Stari Grad Plain on Hvar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a remarkably intact ancient Greek chora (agricultural colony) established by colonists from Paros in 384 BC. The original grid of dry-stone walls, fields, and irrigation channels has been continuously farmed for 2,400 years with almost no change to its layout. The town of Stari Grad itself (Croatia's oldest continuously inhabited town) has a striking old quarter including the fortified manor of Renaissance poet Petar Hektorović (Tvrdalj), now a museum. A bus or taxi runs the 20km from Hvar Town to Stari Grad. The plain is freely accessible on foot year-round; Tvrdalj charges a small entry fee.
Seasonal note: Visit in spring or autumn to walk the plain in comfortable temperatures; summer heat can make the exposed grid tracks punishing midday
