About This Activity

Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km west of Agra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — an immaculately preserved imperial city that Akbar built as his capital in 1571 and abruptly deserted around 1585. The complex is dramatically different from Agra: quieter, all rose-red sandstone, and deeply evocative. Don't miss the Buland Darwaza (one of the world's largest gateways), the Panch Mahal five-storey wind palace, and the Diwan-i-Khas throne hall. Entry is ₹550 for foreigners; hire a licensed guide at the gate (₹300–500) to unlock the full history. Factor 1 hour transit each way from Agra by taxi.

Seasonal note: Best October–March. Summer heat (April–June) makes this exposed site uncomfortable; avoid midday. Monsoon rains (July–September) can make sandstone paths slippery.
