About This Activity

The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Gharapuri Island, contain five rock-cut Hindu cave temples dating to the 5th–7th centuries. The centrepiece of Cave 1 is a colossal 6-metre trimurti — a three-headed bust of Shiva considered one of the greatest sculptures in world art. The ferry from Gateway of India takes about an hour; boats run from 9 AM with the last return at 5 PM. Entry is ₹600 for foreigners (ferry ₹260 extra). Closed Mondays. Wear comfortable shoes as the steps from the jetty to caves are steep.

Seasonal note: Best November–March when ferry service is reliable and weather is clear. Monsoon (June–September) ferries may be cancelled in rough seas; call ahead.
