Gateway of India & Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
Mumbai, India
About This Activity
The Gateway of India — a 26-metre basalt arch completed in 1924 — stands at Apollo Bunder as Mumbai's defining landmark, framing the harbour where the last British troops departed India in 1948. Directly behind it, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (1903) was India's first hotel with electricity and remains one of Asia's grandest. The waterfront promenade buzzes with ferry touts, balloon sellers, and street photographers. Ferries to Elephanta Island depart from the adjacent jetty every 30 minutes from 9 AM — combine both into one morning.
Seasonal note: Best November–March: cool, dry weather perfect for waterfront strolling. Monsoon (June–September) can be spectacular but promenade gets crowded with rain shelters scarce.
