Masada National Park
Dead Sea Area, Israel
About This Activity
Masada is one of Israel's most iconic sites — an ancient desert fortress built by Herod the Great on a sheer plateau rising 450 metres above the Dead Sea. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the complex contains remarkably preserved ruins of Herod's palaces, Roman baths, storehouses, and a Byzantine-era church. The site is famous for the last Jewish Zealots who held it against Roman siege in 73 CE. Entry plus round-trip cable car costs 77 NIS; hiking the Snake Path at sunrise is the most dramatic experience.
Seasonal note: Year-round but sunrise hike best in cooler months. Cable car operates year-round.
