Western Wall (Kotel)
Jerusalem, Israel
About This Activity
The Western Wall (HaKotel HaMa'aravi) is the holiest accessible site in Judaism, the last remnant of the retaining wall surrounding the ancient Temple Mount. Millions of Jews, Christians, and Muslims visit each year to pray, leave written prayers in the wall's crevices, and stand in contemplation of centuries of history and faith. The plaza is open 24 hours a day and is particularly moving at dawn on Friday mornings and during Jewish holidays, when the atmosphere of collective prayer is overwhelming. Men and women pray at separate sections of the wall.
Seasonal note: Year-round, open 24 hours. Friday evenings and Jewish holidays are most atmospheric.
