Travel from Cinque Terre to Santa Margherita Ligure by train (1.5 hours), then take the ferry or local bus 5 km to Portofino — the Riviera's most picturesque fishing village, famous for its super-yacht harbour and colourful townhouses. Climb the 20-minute path to Castello Brown (€5) for views down over the entire harbour, then descend for a long lunch at one of the piazza restaurants (budget €25-40 for pasta and local wine). The lighthouse hike (45 minutes return) offers unobstructed views across the Gulf of Tigullio. The village itself costs nothing to wander.
Seasonal note: Summer is very crowded with yachts; spring and autumn visits are far more relaxed
