About This Activity
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest of Rome's 26 churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and one of the four major basilicas, making it a key stop on the traditional pilgrim circuit. Its nave ceiling — gilded with the first gold brought from the Americas — and the fifth-century mosaic cycle in the apse rank among the finest early Christian art in the world. The crypt houses an urn said to contain planks from Christ's manger, drawing pilgrims year-round. Entry is free.
