Jewish Ghetto & Great Synagogue of Rome
Rome, Italy
About This Activity
The Ghetto di Roma was established in 1555 and housed Rome's Jewish population for over 300 years. Walk the atmospheric streets around Via del Portico d'Ottavia, visit the Great Synagogue (Tempio Maggiore, 1904) and its basement Jewish Museum documenting 2,200 years of Roman Jewish life. See the stumbling stones (Stolpersteine) memorializing Holocaust deportees. Stop for fried artichokes (carciofi alla giudia) at a traditional Roman-Jewish trattoria — the dish was invented here.
Seasonal note: Open year-round; pleasant in spring and autumn
