Lucca Day Trip — Renaissance Walls and Medieval Towers
Tuscany, Italy
About This Activity
Reach Lucca by train from Florence or Pisa in under 30 minutes. Rent a bicycle (€3/hour) at the city gates and pedal the 4 km circuit atop the perfectly preserved Renaissance walls — broad enough for two bikes abreast with plane trees providing shade. Dismount at the elliptical Piazza dell'Anfiteatro (built over a Roman amphitheatre), then climb the 230 steps of the Guinigi Tower, famous for the oak trees growing from its summit. Budget €15-20 for bike hire, tower entry, and an espresso at Piazza San Michele.
Seasonal note: Lucca Comics & Games festival in late October fills the town; spring is ideal
