Hakone Shrine & Heiwa Torii Gate on Lake Ashi
Hakone, Japan
About This Activity
Hakone Shrine sits on the wooded shore of Lake Ashi and is one of the Kanto region's most revered Shinto shrines — founded in 757 AD. The 'Heiwa-no-Torii' (Torii of Peace) stands in the water of Lake Ashi and is Hakone's most photographed landmark; it's best captured in morning mist or with autumn foliage. The shrine grounds are free and open any time; the treasure house museum (9 am–4 pm) costs ¥500. Walk the cedar-forested path from the lakeside torii up to the main hall — about 10 minutes.
Seasonal note: Year-round free access; autumn foliage and morning mist Oct–Nov for best photos
