Owakudani Volcanic Valley & Ropeway, Hakone
Hakone, Japan
About This Activity
Owakudani is Hakone's most dramatic volcanic attraction — a still-active geothermal area at 1,040 m where steam vents and bubbling pools fill the air with sulfur. The Hakone Ropeway gondola passes directly over the valley between Sounzan and Togendai (included in the ¥6,100 Hakone Free Pass or pirate ship + ropeway pass ¥5,000). The 30-minute Owakudani crater trail requires advance reservations and costs ¥800; try the famous kuro-tamago (black eggs hard-boiled in volcanic springs, ¥500 for 5) at the station. Ropeway occasionally closes in high winds — check conditions before visiting.
Seasonal note: Year-round; ropeway closes in high winds — check conditions; clearest Mt. Fuji views Oct–Feb
