Hakone packs extraordinary variety into a day — ride the scenic Odakyu Romancecar train from Shinjuku (85 min), cruise pirate-boat across Lake Ashi with Mt. Fuji backdrop, ride the Hakone Ropeway over steaming Owakudani volcanic valley, and visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Finish at a roadside onsen for a dip in sulfurous hot spring water before heading back. The Hakone Free Pass (¥6,100 from Shinjuku) covers all transport and most attractions.
