The Monastery (Ad-Deir)
Petra, Jordan
About This Activity
Ad-Deir — 'The Monastery' — is Petra's largest monument and, for many visitors, its most spectacular. Reached via a 45-minute climb up 850 rock-cut steps (or by donkey), the façade measures 47 metres wide and 48 metres tall — dwarfing the Treasury. The steps wind through dramatic scenery past Bedouin tea stalls and canyon views. At the top, the plateau offers a café with one of the most striking views in Jordan: the Monastery framed against empty desert sky. Ad-Deir was likely built as a temple or royal tomb in the 1st century CE. Allow two hours round-trip for the climb and exploration.
