The Siq Canyon Walk
Petra, Jordan
About This Activity
The Siq is the main entrance to Petra — a narrow, winding gorge created by a geological fault that splits the sandstone mountain for 1.2km. The walls rise up to 80 metres in places, narrowing to just 3 metres at some points, creating an extraordinary corridor of striated rose, purple, and orange rock. Along the way, you can see Nabataean water channels carved into the walls (an extraordinary feat of ancient hydraulic engineering), votive niches, and the remains of paved Roman road. The Siq walk culminates in the first glimpse of the Treasury through the narrow slot of rock — a moment of revelation that is one of the great travel experiences.
