About This Activity

Al-Khazneh — 'The Treasury' — is the most iconic structure in Jordan and one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on Earth. The 40-metre-high façade was carved directly into the rose-red sandstone cliff by Nabataean craftsmen around the 1st century BCE, serving as the royal mausoleum of King Aretas IV. The arrival through the dramatic 1.2km-long Siq canyon — a winding crack in the rock that narrows to just 3 metres — makes the reveal of the Treasury one of the great experiences in travel. Entry to Petra is covered by the Jordan Pass (highly recommended for visitors planning to see Petra — it saves significant money and eliminates the need for a separate visa). The Treasury is best photographed in the morning when the sun illuminates the façade.
