Rotorua Lakefront & Government Gardens Walk
Rotorua, New Zealand
About This Activity
Lake Rotorua's lakefront is one of New Zealand's most distinctive free walks — geothermal vents steam directly from the shoreline, and the sulphur smell is unmistakably Rotorua. The Government Gardens alongside it were laid out in the 1880s around the ornate Tudor-style Bath House (the Rotorua Museum building). Note: the museum has been closed since 2016 for earthquake strengthening and is not expected to reopen until 2027–28. The formal rose gardens and croquet lawn provide a striking contrast against boiling mud and steam. A great orientation walk on arrival — the lakefront road leads directly to the Polynesian Spa. Completely free.
Seasonal note: Year-round; rose gardens peak in November–January; steamy lakefront atmosphere is year-round
