Quinta da Regaleira & Initiation Well
Sintra, Portugal
About This Activity
Quinta da Regaleira is Sintra's most atmospheric estate, built in the early 1900s by millionaire Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro with architect Luigi Manini. The grounds are riddled with symbolism: the iconic Initiation Well spirals 27 meters underground, connecting to a network of tunnels, grottoes, and waterfall-fed lakes. The Neo-Gothic palace, Romanesque chapel, and lush gardens add to the enchantment. Budget 2 hours and wear sturdy shoes for the underground passages.
Seasonal note: Open daily 10am–7pm (summer), 10am–6:30pm (winter). Morning visits avoid peak crowds. Tunnel passages can be slippery in rain — wear sturdy shoes.
