About This Activity

Seokguram Grotto, on the summit of Tohamsan Mountain above Bulguksa, houses one of Asia's greatest Buddhist sculptures — Korea's National Treasure No. 24 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artificial stone cave protects a 3.5-meter seated granite Shakyamuni Buddha whose gaze is oriented toward the East Sea at sunrise. Completed in 774 AD, the grotto's engineering includes a natural ventilation system that has kept condensation off the stone for 1,250 years. Admission has been free since April 2024. Combine with Bulguksa below for a half-day pilgrimage itinerary.

Seasonal note: Year-round; forest walk is most beautiful in spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (foliage). Pair with Bulguksa on the same morning.
