El Born Food Market Walk
Barcelona, Spain
About This Activity
The Mercat de Santa Caterina is El Born's working neighborhood market — a spectacular 2005 Enric Miralles-designed building with a wildly colorful mosaic tile roof — preferred by locals over the touristy Boqueria. The surrounding El Born streets are lined with independent chocolatiers, cheese shops, olive oil specialists, and natural wine bars. The Mercat del Born iron pavilion (a former 19th-century market) houses ruins of the 1714 siege of Barcelona beneath its glass floor as a free archaeological museum. Entry to the archaeological zone is free.
Seasonal note: Year-round. Santa Caterina market is closed Sundays; the Born archaeological site is open Tuesday–Sunday.
