The Barri Gòtic is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval city centers, built atop the Roman settlement of Barcino. Highlights include remnants of original 1st-century BC Roman walls, the magnificent Barcelona Cathedral with its cloister of 13 geese, the palm-shaded Plaza Reial with wrought-iron lampposts designed by the young Gaudí, and the evocative El Call (former Jewish quarter).
